My goal of this social commentary piece was to paint a negative image of coal trains.  As far as pollution and the continuous traffic through Montanas beautiful land. I understand that coal is a necessity for us, though I wish it wasn't, but the amount of coal trains that pass through a town is shocking.  Train cars full of pollution, and train cars polluting themselves with coal dust and noise.  I wish we had alternative sources of energy that were used more often so that coal would be obsolete.  Instead of seeing trains carrying coal all the time I would like to see trains carrying wind turbines, or large solar panels.  At first this photo was just of a picture of a coal train with a crow on top of it.  Using photoshop I put in a murder of crows in the sky to create a more erie and ominous feeling.  I also used a filter on the image to make it look more evil and negative.  I used these different effects because at first there was not an obvious stance on coal trains.  There was nothing in the picture that screamed out “I hate coal trains!”  By using photoshop I was able to make my message obvious to the viewer.

My portrait is of my roommate Kirsty Montignani.  As far as capturing personality and character I feel it is a very accurate photo.  She is a very fun, care free, and outgoing individual and you can sense that from the photo.  She is also from Scotland so I wanted to put in a few things that represent that.  She is wearing the Scotland flag around her shoulders and a plaid hat with some fake red hair coming out.  It is a goofy picture but Kirsty is a goofy person.  Technically I would have done a few things differently.  I took the photo inside and opened the window to let in some natural light from the left side of the photo.  There is also a small lamp on that was giving some light to the right side of the photo.  At first I was in in aperture priority and changed it to F8 but that wasn't really producing very sharp images so I tried out one of my pre settings.  I ended up using a indoor portrait setting which gave me decent results.  I would have liked to have some better lighting and maybe a more appealing background but overall I think capturing this persons likeness was successful.

I took this photograph on my way to Yellowstone National Park.  It was early in the morning and everything was so calm and quiet.  To create a mystical feel to this photo I inserted a few shouted figures in the foreground jumping from rock to rock and one hang gliding out of the sky.  These changes are subtle but once noticed I think they create a cool mood.  They are images of people but to me I see them as little mystical creators that come out before any of us humans can spot them.  They swim, jump and play in this beautiful spot before any humans get a chance to see them.  The Photoshop process was a good learning experience because I haven’t combined images this way since high school and I am glad to know how it works because it can be a useful tool.
